Retainer Instructions
Retainer Care Instructions from Foster Orthodontics
Congratulations on completing your orthodontic treatment at Foster Orthodontics! Now that you have your retainer, it’s essential to properly care for it to maintain the results of your treatment.
Follow these instructions to ensure the longevity and effectiveness of your retainer:
Wear Your Retainer Consistently: Initially, wear your retainer full-time, removing it only for eating, brushing, and flossing. Over time, your orthodontist will advise you to transition to wearing it only at night.
Handle with Care: Always handle your retainer with clean hands. Avoid dropping it or bending the wires, as this can damage the appliance.
Clean Your Retainer Daily: Clean your retainer thoroughly each day using a soft toothbrush and mild soap or retainer cleaner. Avoid using hot water, harsh chemicals, or abrasive toothpaste, as these can damage the retainer.
Rinse After Eating: After eating, rinse your retainer with lukewarm water to remove food particles and bacteria. Do not use hot water, as it can warp the retainer.
Store Properly When Not in Use: When you’re not wearing your retainer, store it in its case to protect it from damage and prevent loss. Keep it away from pets or small children who may mistake it for a toy.
Keep Away from Heat: Avoid exposing your retainer to heat, such as hot water, direct sunlight, or hot car interiors, as it can cause the retainer to warp or distort.
Regular Check-Ups: Attend regular follow-up appointments with your orthodontist to ensure that your retainer continues to fit properly and effectively maintain your smile.
Replace if Necessary: If your retainer becomes damaged, warped, or no longer fits properly, contact our office for an evaluation. Your orthodontist may need to adjust or replace the retainer to ensure continued effectiveness.
Continue Oral Hygiene: Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing your teeth regularly, even while wearing your retainer. This helps prevent plaque buildup and tooth decay.
Avoid Eating or Drinking with Your Retainer: To prevent damage and bacterial growth, remove your retainer before eating or drinking anything besides water.
If you have any questions or concerns about caring for your retainer or need to schedule a follow-up appointment, don’t hesitate to contact Foster Orthodontics. We’re here to support you in maintaining your beautiful smile for years to come!
